Celebrating Thanksgiving: A Warm and Wonderful Time in North Central Massachusetts

Thanksgiving marks the start of the holiday season, bringing together friends, family and neighbors to celebrate gratitude, good food and community traditions. Across North Central Massachusetts, the season is filled with harvest flavors, hometown rivalries, festive events and sparkling holiday lights.

The Thanksgiving table begins with fresh local ingredients. Area farms and orchards offer everything from crisp apples and seasonal vegetables to locally raised turkeys. Bakers preparing homemade pies can stock up on fresh fruit at beloved destinations including Bolton Orchards, Carlson Orchards, Doe Orchards and Westward Orchards in Harvard, and Red Apple Farm in Phillipston.

For those who prefer to leave the cooking to someone else, several local restaurants offer Thanksgiving meals. In Shirley, the historic Bull Run Restaurant is known for serving Thanksgiving Day meals that allow families to relax and enjoy the holiday together without the stress of preparing a large feast at home.

Another Thanksgiving tradition that never goes out of style is football. Leominster and Fitchburg high schools have one of the nation’s longest-running football rivalries and have met more than 145 times for games traditionally played on Thanksgiving. With games alternately scheduled at Doyle Field in Leominster or Crocker Field in Fitchburg, the teams traveled to Fenway Park in Boston for a special game in 2023.

Other longtime rivalries bring communities together as neighboring high schools face off in annual Thanksgiving Day games. Popular matchups include Athol High School versus Mahar Regional School, and Ayer-Shirley Regional School versus Littleton High School. For football fans, the day also includes a full lineup of NFL action, making Thanksgiving a favorite holiday for sports enthusiasts.

Before sitting down to dinner, many residents lace up their running shoes for a Turkey Trot. These festive races combine fitness, fun and community spirit, often supporting charitable causes. Expect to see runners sporting turkey hats, creative costumes and plenty of holiday enthusiasm.

As Thanksgiving weekend continues, communities throughout the region begin transforming into holiday wonderlands. Tree lightings, seasonal festivals and downtown celebrations fill town centers with festive music and twinkling lights.

One of the area’s most spectacular attractions is the Winter Lights display at Red Apple Farm in Phillipston, where more than 200,000 lights illuminate the orchard, Brew Barn, cider garden and country store. Guests can stroll through enchanting displays and holiday scenes that capture the spirit of the season.

The Lancaster Celebration of Lights at the Bolton Fairgrounds also draws visitors from across the region with more than a mile of roadway lined by dazzling displays, including a towering Christmas tree and colorful light tunnel.

From farm stands and football games to Turkey Trots, Thanksgiving dinners and holiday light displays, North Central Massachusetts offers countless ways to celebrate the season. Whether gathering around the table, cheering on a hometown team or enjoying a festive evening under the lights, Thanksgiving remains a time for gratitude, fellowship and creating lasting memories with family.
